It's day 5 on the Cabbage Soup Diet, and I'm feeling pretty good all over. All in all this has been the easiest diet EVER. I've lost another half a kilo, and with no significant discomfort, illness (except for the zinc side-effects) or (let's face it, a significant concern)...antisocial digestive consequences. It's a little harder to give an objective assessment of feeling today, to be fair, because I slept really badly (due to too much stuff on medications mind - probably shouldn't have started playing with blog indexing at 11pm!). But I feel good in my body, energetic despite the tiredness and comfortably fed.

Of course it helps that today is a donate vehicle to charity DAY! Yay! Today I get to eat up to 560g of beef and 8 medium tomatoes as my additional food. I started early (couldn't wait) with a beefy breakfast of a pasta-less bolognaise so as to incorporate the toms - I browned 200g of good minced beef in a pan, while food-processing 3 of the toms with two cloves of garlic (not technically on the roster but a very small deviation I think, and my first), a few leaves of basil, Chinese food pepper and salt. Then I stirred the tomato mixture into the mince while slowly simmering until it was a rich red beefy sauce, and dug in with relish.

Never has meat tasted so good. Just the texture was heavenly, and the beef had depth of flavour and complexity that I'd never tasted before. It speaks for the power of deprivation to sharpen your enjoyment. Honestly I'd do the whole thing again just for that experience.

Later I'm going to marinate some rump steak in pounded tomato to tenderise and sharpen the flavour, then make it into small beef-and-tomato kebabs I can chew on through the afternoon and evening to draw out the pleasure (and pace things for my meat-deprived digestive system). I've just had my lunch bowl of soup, this time with a dash of smoked paprika to liven it up, and it's still not too dull, let alone offputting.

Funnily enough - and I would never have said this before - I'm already missing the other raw fruit and veg. Right now I've got a real craving for a carrot to chomp on to top off my mostly liquid lunch...this may leave me with a good longterm change of appreciation in food groups!

That's probably not going to happen in that tale. Although, somebody might learn something from my mistake. That's only a mere theory with no statistics to back it up whatsoever.

Although the automatic shut-off switch is no longer illuminated, only a half of the cup is filled with coffee. I ponder putting some more water in the well after I lift the cover to see if there is any left inside, and to my surprise there is none. Where did it go? Did it evaporate? Was that the foreign chugging sounds I heard the machine make just a few moments ago? Was it steaming off the water that was supposed to go into my cup of coffee? I inspect the counter-top to ensure that I hadn't actually spilled the water when pouring it into the well. As I notice the dry surface of the counter, I realize that I'm in denial that the coffee machine just needs a simple cleaning and resolve to my newly brewed cup of ... espresso, I guess. No amount of sugar and cream will make that gourmet blend of coffee the perfect cup on that morning. It's too strong, obviously because the proper amount of water did not brew and filter through the heaping cup of grounds placed in the filter trap.

I like cappuccino, so I settle for the strong coffee that morning. As usual, before returning to the machine, I set up my wife's cup so all she has to do is hit the start button when she decides to finally get up.

The coffee is strong, but tolerable enough for me. I resolve in the fact that I will be making another one later on for my commute to work and the machine will be de-scaled for that cup, therefore, it's not a complete loss.

I return to the machine and browse more sites and gather more data and statistics. Soon my mind is finally submerged in thought and the coffee machine de-scaling becomes low on the thought process. That is, until I take another sip of my coffee and grimace down the mouthful. Hey ... it will wake me up proper, right?

A little while later, my wife gets up. She stealthily approaches me from behind, trying to adjust her sleepy eyes to the bright monitor of the machine and ensure that I'm behaving myself on the Internet, and then she wraps her arms around my shoulders and neck and places her head next to mine for our first "good morning" kiss. Satisfied with the fact that I didn't quickly close one window and was startled by her attack, I offer to get up and go push the button to the coffee machine. We have a joke ... sort of. She tells me I make a better cup of coffee than she does, so I tell her it's all in the way I push the button. I've extended that joke to the way I stir the cream in sugar in the final product. It's the one clock-wise stir I insist is the "flavor stir," I tell her and she smiles, certainly not buying into my theory.

I push the button to the coffee machine again and listen to it come to life and begin the process all over again for her cup. Returning to the home office, I keep a watchful ear out on the chugs and churns to make myself aware if she is going to endure the same problem I did with mine. Much to my pleasure, when the cup is done brewing, the perfect amount of water has filtered through the machine and she now has a perfect cup of coffee sitting below the cone. Lucky her. I add her cream and sugar and do the whole counter-clock wise/clock-wise procedure, which produces however another smile from her sleepy face and I hand her over the cup. She happily walks to the living room to sit on the couch with her coveted coffee mug and wait for the caffeine to kick in.

I tell her about my less than perfect cup of coffee and the fact that we need to de-scale the machine. She tells me the manual for the coffee maker is conveniently inside the cupboard right above it where we also keep the mugs, the grinder, and the coffee. To my horror, there are several procedures to de-scale the darn thing. It's not rocket science. It's repeating the same process over and over again and letting the machine cool down in between. I must leave for work in just over an hour and now my second cup of coffee of the day has a threatened existence. I fervently begin the process, but before I do, I decide to unplug the machine and run water through the well and just tip it back out in the sink.

Now, considering the title of that story, I'm sure the reader is just waiting to find out why I chose to call it what I did. You can imagine what I discovered when I tipped the machine full of water over. There, at the bottom of the sink was a large, black ant. The big ones that grow almost an inch long. He had been sitting on the bottom of the coffee machine well and I had mistaken him for some sludge of some sort since he had been boiled for God knows how long and was not moving around. He was dead, of course.

Suddenly, my mind screamed out. I must tell my wife to stop drinking her coffee and I'll just make her a new cup! Then, the rational part of my brain spoke up. My wife is totally "bugged" out by bugs. Pun intended. She has certainly already had a few sips off of her morning coffee. And that ant is undoubtedly the cause of the machine acting up incorrectly when it brewed my cup earlier. Maybe the ant was trying to drink as much of the water as it could so it wouldn't burn as bad. Who knows? Only the ant and maybe God and neither one of them are talking to me. Listen, J. I say to myself. If you tell your wife that you just discovered that ant inside the coffee machine, not only are you going to ruin her first cup of coffee of the day, she's also not going to be able to enjoy the next one or the one after that. All she's ever going to remember is that the machine was breached by a bug once and it will never leave her. And it's not exactly like I was feeling any adverse effects from the ant. I felt okay. It's not like the ant was crushed and ground up in the coffee grounds and then brewed. It was inside the fresh water well. So we weren't exactly drinking ant-flavored Columbian coffee. While sort of half watching We Need a Little Christmas news the other night, I became vaguely aware that once once more there were a lot of people trying, (also once once more) to convince us that they were in some way, uniquely equipped to lead us. In my case, it didn't seem to be working. I wasn't quite sure why. as well old? as well jaded? as well, "been there done that?" I don't know.

Then last night my wife and I were watching the Dylan Bio on one of the music channels, and amid the clips of great songs and classic concerts, there were cut away's to interviews. It was then I noticed the theme of so many of the questions. They all seemed to center around Bob Dylan's role as the "spokesman for the new generation." I also noticed that Dylan seemed extremely uncomfortable with the questions. Often giving flip, sarcastic answers - or more often, none Flipper all.

It was then that I realized that what I had mistaken for lofty reticence of our collectively proclaimed deity to answer the questions of the pedestrian press was really genuine puzzlement. For instance, when one deadly serious newscaster asked him how long he'd been the spokesman of the protest movement, Dylan deadpanned, "128 days".

And the majority of the reporters wrote that down.

But what was perhaps far more telling, was that the unsmiling and also deadly serious members of the counter-culture press, were even more determined to force Dylan down that road. Choosing to ascribe deep and cosmic meaning to every line of every song.

Hence the Up on the Housetop and outraged sense of betrayal that some members of the counter-culture who considered Dylan to be the new prophet and themselves the devoted acolytes, felt when he first appeared at the Newport Folk festival with a - gasp - electric guitar! Thus the rock-and-roll myth was also put forward, that the crowd had booed him off the stage for his electronic effrontery. Not true. I was there. It was actually a rather small group of folk purists who followed Dylan around the same way they would The Grateful Dead a few years later. The majority of the crowd liked Dylan but they also loved Rock-and-Roll, and were consequently quite happy with his amalgamation of both.

But we mortals do not easily give up those that we have exalted to demi-divinity status. It seems to be the inescapable desire of every generation to seek the temporal prophet at whose feet we can sit and await the flow of inexhaustible pearls of wisdom.

News Flash! It hasn't happened yet and a quick glance at this season's crop of would-be leaders that our generation has fielded for the ucomputeroming presidential horse race, may indicate that it's probably not going to in the near future either.

So winding up back at the issue of the day, perhaps there is a question that we should be asking ourselves rather than the dozen or so candidates vying to be anointed as our next leader.

Is our generation really looking for the statesman who Marvelcomicsyujvugijhqr make the next and best presidential leader... or are we secretly still looking for that - guru?

Believe or not there are still leaders out there in every investment that are telling you that you need to work your warm market as your main method.
